Experiencing Medicine Beyond Borders: Lia’s Summer at McGill
This summer, our medical student Lia Hutter from Bern took part in the McGill Summer School in Montreal, gaining not only new academic insights but also unforgettable cultural experiences.
What motivated her to join? “I was inspired by the opportunity to learn more about a different healthcare system and to broaden my horizon by experiencing how medicine is practiced abroad,” Lia explains.
Among the many highlights were the sessions in McGill’s Skills Lab, the inspiring exchanges with specialists, and especially a moving encounter with a palliative care patient. She also valued the international dimension of the program: “International collaboration was something I experienced on a daily basis. The exchanges clearly showed how such cooperation enhances teaching and education.”
For Lia, meeting students and faculty from around the globe was “one of the most enriching and inspiring parts of the program.” She gained insights into different healthcare systems, built professional networks, and experienced firsthand how global partnerships drive research and education forward.
Beyond the lectures and training, Montreal itself left a strong impression with its vibrant cultural mix and openness to new ideas.
Her biggest takeaway? “Working with exceptional people from all over the world who share the same passion as I do.”
